“Like a good book or an incredible outfit, being on vacation transports you into another version of yourself.”
I think the book cover itself is a perfect description of how it makes you feel. It was so colourful and happy and summery I loved it. For me, it was the perfect book to get over a major reading slump(thank god).
This story is told from the perspective of Poppy Wright, a blogger from New York City. Every summer, she goes on a trip with her best friend Alex Nilsen who she met in college. The best part is that both of them are totally opposites of each other so their dynamic just fits. While Alex is more introverted, meticulous and measured, Poppy is outgoing, impulsive, and adventurous. However, after one particular trip they stopped talking to each other. They finally reconnect after two years and decide to go on one final trip.
The narrative switches from their current holiday to their previous summer trips which can get a little confusing at times like it did for me but it makes it all the more interesting. At first they hated each other (it reminds me so much of the movie 'When Harry Met Sally'). Slowly, after each interaction they become best friends and honestly this was one of the best book friendships I've ever read. Laughing till they cried, their inside jokes, late night studying, these just made me smile so much. Emily Henry wrote that part absolutely beautifully.
“I've always felt like once someone sees me deep down, that's it. There's something ugly in there, or unlovable, and you're the only person who's ever made me feel like I'm okay."
I also loved the fact that even though Poppy's such a successful blogger, she has her insecurities which were showcased really well. Her story isn't perfect and is deeply rooted with her own inner battles; but like all of us, she just wants to find happiness which she does in Alex. However, even though this book lacked in a lot of aspects such as a well flowing story (it got slow in the middle) and romance (it was way too rushed), it's worth picking up for a quick short read that leaves you beaming and giddy.
My favourite quote- "I didn’t know regular life could feel like this, like a vacation you don’t have to go home from."
Also just so that you don't get confused, in the US it is called "People We Meet on Vacation", and in the UK it is called "You and Me on Vacation".
